Knee
ACL Reconstruction
ACL tears are a common sports injury in the knees. ACL reconstruction surgery is often needed for a patient to regain full knee function. Older methods of ACL reconstruction made for a very difficult and painful recovery. Dr. Cahill utilizes the latest, most advanced approaches for ACL reconstruction, using minimally invasive methods and multi-modal pain management techniques that make recovery much easier on patients. After full healing and rehabilitation, most athletes are able to return to activity.
Knee Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical approach that allows Dr. Cahill to perform knee surgery through much smaller incisions than are required for an open procedure. Not all knee procedures can be completed with arthroscopy, but ACL repairs and reconstructions are often done arthroscopically.
Dr. Cahill also uses arthroscopy in cartilage restoration procedures. Cartilage restoration is a relatively new procedure that can stimulate the growth of new cartilage. Cartilage restoration may not be appropriate for all patients, but it can be effective for patients with a single area of cartilage damage in the knee.
Hip
Hip Arthroscopy
Hip arthroscopy is a procedure that may be used to treat common athletic injuries like hip labral tears and impingement. Arthroscopy allows for quicker recovery so athletes can get back to play more quickly. Dr. Cahill is fellowship trained in sports medicine, and arthroscopy is a large part of surgical treatment of sports injuries.
Shoulder
Rotator Cuff Repair
Rotator cuff tears are a common shoulder injury among athletes and people whose jobs require repetitive shoulder motions. Some rotator cuff tears can be treated with nonsurgical methods, but patients with significant shoulder pain and weakness may require rotator cuff repair surgery. Dr. Cahill uses the latest minimally invasive methods for rotator cuff repair, which makes recovery easier on the patient. His goal is to help patients get back to their work and sports activities with better shoulder function and less pain.
Shoulder Labral Tears
The labrum is a ring of cartilage surrounding the shoulder socket. It plays a critical role in stabilizing the shoulder and preventing it from dislocating. Sudden injuries or repetitive shoulder motions during sports or occupational activities can cause a tear in the labrum, and may also affect the tendons attached to it, causing pain and instability. Dr. Cahill diagnoses and treats labral tears in the shoulder with a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure. After surgery and recovery, patients are able to return to work and sports-related activities.
Foot and Ankle
Ankle Sprain Treatment
Ankle sprains are among the most common injuries to the lower extremities. Not all ankle sprains are alike, and each type may require a different course of treatment. It is recommended that you see a qualified foot and ankle specialist to get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. Dr. Kovatis has nearly 25 years of experience in treating ankle sprains in patients, including pro athletes.
Stress Fractures of the Foot & Ankle
Foot & ankle stress fractures are the most common type of stress fracture in the body. Foot & ankle stress fractures can vary in location and severity, and treatments must be tailored to the injury and the individual to yield the best results. Dr. Kovatis has treated stress fractures in the foot and ankle for many years, in patients ranging from weekend warriors to pro-level baseball players and dancers.
Pediatrics
Pediatric Sports Medicine & Fracture Care
Dr. Cahill treats sports injuries and fractures in children and adolescents as well as adults. Children need specialized care for sports injuries and fractures, as they are still growing and may need a different treatment approach for an injury than an adult might. Dr. Cahill is fellowship trained pediatric orthopedics to provide the specialized care that young patients need after an injury. He also works closely with many of the local sports teams at schools throughout the Hackensack area.
About Cahill Orthopedics
The surgeons at Cahill Orthopedics are fellowship trained in sports medicine. They treat sports injuries involving the knees, shoulders, hips, elbows, and ankles in patients of all ages. Dr. Cahill is also fellowship trained in pediatric orthopedic care to provide the specialized care that young patients need following a sports injury.
Whenever possible, we aim to treat sports injuries using nonsurgical methods. We only recommend surgery for sports injuries when more conservative treatments have failed. Our goal is to help athletes return to activity whenever possible, but to help them do so safely and with reduced risk of re-injury.
